Scott McNulty has compiled a pretty good list of must-have items for any upcoming iTunes 9 upgrade. But there’s only one item on this list that matters to me:
Libraries on the network: It is possible to store your iTunes library somewhere other than your Mac’s hard disk, but it isn’t easy. With the advent of cheap, fast network-attached storage, making this much easier seems like a no brainer to me.
With several iPods/iPhones in the house, 5 Macs of varying ages, three children and two adults with different music and video stored in different places, this, for me, is the next killer app.
Yes, I am aware that it’s possible to create a network attached iTunes server with bubblegum, tape, an AppleScript, and a network attached server, but the bottom line is… I shouldn’t have to. It’s such an obvious addition I can’t imagine why it hasn’t been done yet.
No brainer? No question.
