So, here we are again. Blog Action Day 2009 and… I’m afraid to say, we’re repeating ourselves.

In 2007, the first year that Blog Action Day made an appearance, the subject matter was “Global Warming.” A worthy subject, that I wrote about in a heartfelt manner, and with sincere intent. Last year BAD took on poverty as a subject. It was a challenging undertaking for me, and made me work and think in a different way. I’m still moved by Geoffrey Canada and his work with the Harlem Children’s Zone. I think you will be too.

So here we are in 2009 revisiting the same subject that we visited in 2007. Granted, it’s got a new name: Climate Change. But it’s the same old subject, Global Warming, with a slightly different name that paints things with a much broader brush. (Think, rain, snow, sleet, or hail… no matter the weather, it all falls under the umbrella of Climate Change. I think there’s a name for that… Newsspeak, to be exact. And you’ll also note that it’s a Thoughtcrime to think differently on the subject of Climate Change. Hmmm…) And it appears that we’ve got Al Gore on board this year to flog his latest endeavors, or to sell you some carbon offsets, or otherwise relieve you of the cash in your pocket. (I’m sure it’s much more difficult now that he’s out of politics. He can’t just raise your taxes.)

Hey bloggers,

We have exciting news! Blog Action Day has partnered with Al Gore’s group the Alliance for Climate Protection to start a global online action addressed to the one country whose actions will most influence the future of our climate: the United States.

Blog Action Day 09: Climate Change.

I like Blog Action Day. I think it’s a great idea, but I’d like to see something else on the table. I’m not bored with Global Warming, (née Climate Change), but, as I stated in my 2007 post, I think the jury is still out.

Maybe next year we can take on hunger, or third world poverty, or first world destitution, or why it’s taken 8-years to build a monument at Ground Zero. This year, I’m a little tired of BAD’s love affair with buzzword politics. Next year I’d like something with teeth.

Please?
