Neven Mrgan on Whether Apple Will Get Into the Publishing Business | via Daring Fireball Linked List

And who wants a dozen different apps for accessing e-books? As Craig Hockenberry tweeted, “It’s like asking bands to release an app for each album. We need MP3 for words.”

I agree, I’ve tried the GQ Magazine app and from the outset it’s a mistake.

Sorry, but I have to download a new app for every issue of the magazine? Are you freaking kidding me? This is a perfect situation for an in-app purchase bolloxed all to heck. I don’t want magazine apps piling up on my iPhone or my “whatever” device like they do in the basket in my bathroom right now. Wrong paradigm. Bad idea.

Magazine and newspaper subscriptions, subscribed to and delivered with quality packaging, brilliant layout, book marking, video, and access to back issues in a device I can take anywhere? I’m all over it.

But I have to ask… if this is what’s coming at the end of January, wouldn’t some publishers already be aware that something like this is in the pipe?
