Possibly Rolling Out a New Theme

leave a comment

Don’t know whether or not I’ll keep this, but I’m testing out a new theme for the next week or so. I’m trying out Lucian Marin‘s Journalist 1.9 template for WordPress.

Right now I’m finding the white to be a little too white and the black text I’m finding to be not quite bold enough. I may play with the theme a bit to see if I can tweak it so it’s a dark background with lighter text, but for now I’ll have a go with the defaults and see how it plays.

I’ll leave comments open on this post if you want to leave feedback.

WordPress Workover

leave a comment

You may have noticed a bit of a color change today. I’m in the process of reworking my Carrington Text WordPress theme to be more in line with what I like. Small changes overall. I like the simplicity of Carrington Text, but wasn’t in love with the color scheme or the fonts. In the short term I expect to tweak the colors and fonts a little more, put the main column on a bit of a diet to thin it out and, perhaps, move the sidebar to the left-hand side.

I’m not much of a CSS hound, so this is still a work in progress requiring a high level of experimentation. But it’s fun, and I’m learning something in the process.

Oh yeah, David Sawyer McFarland’s CSS: The Missing Manual and MacRabbit’s CSSEdit are what I’m using to help me tweak the site.

WordPress 2 for iPhone

leave a comment

Just now had the opportunity to download the new WordPress 2 iPhone app. Haven’t had a chance to dig in yet, but thought that I’d at least create a new post using it.

So far so good. Looking forward to spending more time with it.

UPDATE: Here’s a link to the aforementioned app.

Daring Fireball: Regarding WordPress and Security

John Gruber on the aforementioned WordPress vulnerability.

But I do honestly have to ask why you wouldn’t update your WordPress install the moment you see that the code has been updated. Seems incredibly obvious to me.

WordPress 2.8 And Two Cool New Features

leave a comment

WordPress 2.8 just released today and although I haven’t time to thoroughly dig into the details yet, there are already two new features that I like a lot.

WordPress 2.8's new theme browser, complete with full page previews

WordPress 2.8's new theme browser, complete with full page previews

First off, there’s a new Themes Preview feature that I like much better than the old version. In WP 2.8 theme previews loaded in a Lightbox, kind of like a photos do, but the Lightbox window contained actual data from your site. The new Preview tool loads an entirely new page with your site in it. It works much better and gives you a much better idea of how your site will look with the new theme.

They’ve also updated WordPress’ Widget tools, making them much easier to use and making it much more obvious what the widget you’re adding as going to add to your site. Earlier versions of WordPress didn’t give you much information on the widgets you were adding and it was impossible to see all of your columns and sidebars at once, which made it difficult to know whether or not you already had a widget installed. WordPress 2.8 gives you detailed information on your widgets and makes it much easier to see everything at once.

I’m sure there’s much more, but from what I’ve seen so far, I’ll like WordPress 2.8 better already.

WordPress Works Fine In Safari 4.0

leave a comment

Several weeks back, when I was testing the new Safari 4.0 beta, I said that something had broken WordPress’ visual editing tools. I’m pleased to announce that today’s Safari 4.0 final release works great!

My understanding was that the problem was related to the way the beta was working with TinyMCE, but it appears that the problem has been fixed. (So I guess I can close this ticket.)

No more broken TinyMCE in Safari 4

I haven’t had much time to play with the release version of Safari yet, but, for the few minutes that I have had to play with it, it appears that it’s smokin’ fast.

Also, for any of you viewing this site using a mobile device, I believe I’ve nailed down the problem I was having with WordPress Mobile, Carrington, and un-clickable links in portrait mode. Looks to have been a plugin problem.

Next up? Customizing Carrington Text to work and look well on this site…
