Note to Cashman, et. al., I completely understand that you need to maximize your investment and that you need to consider the fact that if you renew Jeter’s contract you’re looking at something like a 40-year-old shortstop when his contract is finally up. But you best not miss the value of Jeter’s presence on the field and in the clubhouse.
The ONLY reason I became a Yankee fan after being a Yankee hater for most of my life was because of Jeter. He’s a class act and he’s a player who convinced me that being a Yankee wasn’t just about the money. It was about heart and the love of the game.
Don’t do to Jeter what you did to Bernie, it’ll be a mistake that we both regret.
