Early is good. Darkness is not.

Well in what has been a long string of hurry-up-and-waits, we had an early arrival yesterday. A surprise visit from an unlikely source.

We’re still moving things from the house-to-be-rebuilt to the house we live in now. We’d packed several dozen boxes over the weekend—mostly books and dishes and the like—and I’d been taking a couple of trips a day to bring the boxes from point A to point B. So, after dinner last evening I took a trip—two kids in tow—to the house to grab some boxes and a sorely needed file cabinet.

When I arrived at the house I was surprised to see that the outside light wasn’t on and made a mental note to adjust the timer on the light so I didn’t have to fumble for the house keys in the dark. We three tumbled out of the car and made our way up the steps. I placed the key in the lock and reached around the corner to turn on the porch light only to discover that the light didn’t go on. I flipped the switch a couple of times—Don’t ask why. Perhaps in some deep dark primordial crevice of my mind I figured I’d create enough friction to get a little light going—just to make certain that the lights were not coming on. Which, in fact, they most definitely were not.

So here’s the rub. Last week we had scheduled the CHEnergy Group—formerly known as Central Hudson—to unhook the power at the house on March 1st, 2004. But, instead of coming at the appointed time, they came three weeks early. Surely a good sign. Not a convenient one, but if this is a portent of things to come, then we’re completely down with that. Early is good. On time is better, but we NEVER complain about early.
