Ed Woo’s older brother

This is probably a cheesy joke only appreciated by a few (a very few) people. Namely those on the Redwood Christian High School baseball, soccer, and basketball teams more than 25 years ago. The story goes like this:

Troy V, a member of said teams, had a fairly keen eye for, shall we say, interesting ways to needle anyone in the near vicinity. Once his eye found a target he was relentless, finding new and unusual ways to inflict psychic pain on his victims. (As is often the case with fellows such as these, he was never too appreciative of those who directed a similar sense of humor in his direction, but I digress.)

It just so happened that there was a certain other fellow on these sports teams who filled out his uniform in such a fashion that the front of his jersey never displayed the team name in the same way that it did for all the other players on the team. While we all played for REDWOOD, he appeared to be playing for EDWOO. Ever quick to pick up such idiosyncrasies, Mr. V. donned this fellow Ed Woo. Thus, rather than being called by his normal name during any sporting event (or for that matter, any other school-related event from this time forward) this victim was routinely called Ed or Ed Woo. As in
Mr. Edington, call on Ed Woo, he’s raising his hand in the back," or "Way to go Woo! now next time see if you can get the ball in your glove." High school being the wicked underbelly of the world that it is, you can imagine how this little pet name caught on. And now 25 years later, this nickname emerges from some dark crag of my mind, for seemingly no reason whatsoever.

What, gentle reader, might this have to with progress on our house. Why this silly little link? Well, the hardwood was delivered to our house today. It’ll sit inside through the weekend, getting used to its new home, warming, stretching, and waiting for Monday morning when it will become a permanent part of our house. But the silly little link. This tie to twenty-five years ago has something to do with the way the word hardwood sounds and how close a relationship it has, at least in my mind, to the way that redwood sounds. Ed Woo. Ard Woo. Some bizarro link brings it all together in my mind.

Go ahead friends. Feel free to give a call to the psycho ward…
