I was listening to this week’s Moth Podcast last night, which was, as is often the case, excellent. For those of you unaware of The Moth, the tag line is “True Stories Told Live Without Notes,” and this week’s was a story by comedian Mike Destafano about Franny, his girlfriend, who died from AIDs-related pneumonia.
While the whole story was moving, one part struck me as extraordinarily profound. Franny was in a hospice and, without giving up too much detail, Mike did something very innocent that made Franny very angry. After the event, a social worker said to Mike that,
“…people are never dying. They live and then they die and dying is in a moment. And she feels that you’re treating her as if she’s dying and that you don’t need her anymore.”
I thought this was an amazing way to look at life and to think about those that you love.
I can’t recommend The Moth Podcast enough.
