Evernote

Evernote

I gave it a try, but I’m over it. Evernote showed promise, but in the end it just wasn’t right for me.

There’s no doubt that it’s a slick, maybe even cool idea for simplifying and centralizing the piles of information you have to handle on a day-to-day basis, but for me it got to be just a little too clunky. While there were some things that I liked about it that made it an iPhone-worthy app—I liked that I could take photos of the bottles of wine I enjoyed, record some wine information, and then retrieve that info from anywhere. I liked that I could save documents to Evernote and have them available anywhere. I liked that I could record a voice-note or type a text-note and have them available from anywhere. I LOVED that Evernote was able to recognize text in photos and images. But in the end there were just some general usage issues that made it less than perfect for me.

Wine Snob

Wine Snob

For one, I had to think about using it, which is not really something that I want to do.

Typing a note? Often it was easier to use the iPhone’s Notes than it was to create an Evernote note. I couldn’t sync those notes, but, more often than not, I didn’t need to.

Remembering favorite wines? Shortly after I started using Evernote someone showed me Wine Snob, $1.99 now but free at the time, and it let me do significantly more than Evernote could. Yes, Evernote is free, but Wine Snob is much more specific, and significantly better at capturing the information I was interested in, plus, it too allowed me to take photos of wine bottles, which helps me to “remember” the wines I want without driving the wine shop people nuts. But there was one real killer that put an end to Evernote for me. Dropbox.

Dropbox

Dropbox

I mentioned Dropbox late last week and the more I’ve used it the more indispensable it has become. No, there isn’t yet a useful way to use Dropbox on my iPhone, but it more than adequately serves the purpose that I was hoping to use Evernote for, with SIGNIFICANTLY less hassle. Universally available files, images, and notes all at my fingertips with a minimum of thought.

So, sorry Evernote. I didn’t mean to leave so soon.
